Musings From the Front Lines: 2026 AWMA ACE

PK attended the 119th Air & Waste Management Association Annual Conference and Exhibition (AWMA ACE).  It was held from June 21st through June 25th in Austin, Texas.  In addition to its long-standing role as a leader in high polluting fossil fuels, Texas is also rapidly growing its portfolio with renewable sources of energy such as solar farms, wind farms, and hydrogen production plants.

A&WMA ACE is recognized as a premier international conference, featuring content from international environmental experts from industry, researchers, consulting, legal, and government.  The conference featured over 200 platform and poster presentations, nearly 40 panels, and multiple concurrent tracks each day on air, waste, clean energy, sustainability, and environmental management topics.

PK served as co-chair for the climate portion of the conference which included reviewing over 30 climate-focused  technical papers and presentations, moderating panels and chairing technical platforms which are a series of technical presentations with follow-up Q&A. Highlights included: “Scope 3 with Ease for California Mandatory Reporting of Corporate GHG Emissions”, “AI Use in Air Quality Programs”, “Adapting to Evolving Methane Regulations: Cross-Sector Approaches to Measurement, Reporting and Verification”, “Advancing Low-Carbon Steelmaking: Big River’s Steel’s Responsible Steel GHG Journey”, “Carbon Pricing and Leakage Risks: The Industrial Economics of West Coast Cap-and-Invest Programs” and “A FEMA-Based Multi-Facility Corporate Climate Risk Assessment Procedure”.

It was heartening to see a number of presentations that focused on meeting Carbon Neutrality goals and the commitment from commercial organizations to continue to meet their GHG reduction goals regardless of political headwinds.  Two technical sessions that stood out in terms of extensive and in-depth content include the Methane regulation panel and the FEMA-Based climate risk assessment.
